    myth busting!

  • Matt Baen

I don’t like replacing the myth of the fundamentally aggressive human nature with the myth of fundamentally cooperative nature. Let’s stop worrying about what we “really” are, because that has no meaning outside of what we actually do. Instead, we should try to figure out under which conditions we are aggressive and under which we are cooperative, and who is aggressive and cooperative (gender, class, group) and how, and maybe problematize those concepts – are they really a dichotomy? – and what they mean. A lot of cooperation, after all, is to the end of aggressing against an outgroup group. Should price-fixing count as a form of aggression? And so on.
